News release: Treasure Valley flag football partners with NFL Youth Football

Posted Wed Feb 25, 2009 - 06:32 PM

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

NFL youth football program offers scholarship to keep kids active in tough economy

New flag football league comes to Boise area March 21.

February 23—BOISE—Newly launched Idaho Flag Football League (IFFL) will provide Boise-area youth with a unique new flag football program this March. The IFFL is partnered with NFL Youth Football and has two goals as an organization: to offer a competitive flag football program to Treasure Valley youth, and to make the program accessible for all athletes, regardless of their family’s economic situation.

The league was started by Chris Reynolds, who serves as League Director. Reynolds is former professional football player who played both in Europe and in the Arena Football League until a knee injury ended his career in 2001. Reynolds now works as a probation-parole officer and understands the importance of getting youth involved in sports during the formative years. He hopes to be able to waive the season fee of $85 for players whose families cannot afford it, but he says sponsors are still needed in order to make this happen.

“I know people with kids who have lost their jobs or are stuck in the mortgage crisis; keeping kids active and involved in sports will benefit the entire community, but we need the community’s support to make this league happen.” Reynolds said.

While the league is for-profit, Reynolds believes the matching service of sponsors to players in need, is a unique way to make athletics accessible to families that are cutting back on extra expenses in this economy.

The IFFL is still looking for individual and corporate sponsors. Scholarships are limited and will be assigned based on need, but Reynolds hopes in addition to sponsors, some paying players will choose to sponsor other players who cannot afford the fee.

The inaugural season begins March 21 with the opening ceremonies at Seasons Park in Meridian.

The league is unique in that games will be played on a full-size 100-yard field, with a few rule changes that will maximize competition, scoring and action. The league is open to both boys and girls ages 10-14, and teams are located in Meridian, Caldwell, Eagle, and Boise, while Kuna and Nampa will have two teams each.
